it serves the presenter poorly since no matter how dynamic they might be - most people over the age of 7 in the audience can READ their slides faster than the dman fool can drone through them.

A presentation is an opportunity to tell someone something useful - to give them information that they did not already know - help them avoid a trap they are already walking into - or show them how to do something they can not accomplish today.

A fantastic book regarding one of the great communicators of the last 25 years is JACKED UP by Bill Lane - former speachwriter for Jack Welch at GE.

GE's culture was about learning from best practices - not a cliche that I still associate with a former colleague known as Best Practice Brad that figured his lunch order, hair gel and fingernail cuttings should be collected and stored in the company archive with the same reverence as the Magna Carta - but the real opportunity to share something that IS working with others in the organization as quickly as possible.

Lane's point is that being ON MESSAGE - being consice - being on topic and being USEFUL should the the focus of EVERY presentation....

and he is right!

Pentagon's new map

Most of my friends know that I was a huge fan of Thomas Barnett's book "The Pentagon's New Map" 3-4 years ago when it was released. Culturally, economically, politically, militarily - America is currently without peer. Given that level of influence, Ferguson makes the case that this hegemony is both necessary and beneficial to the world.

Ferguson's argument is not that the U.S. should try to copy the British Imperial model - but instead that America should learn from their predecessors and in effect quit trying to rationalize the fact that the US is not an empire (as both politicians and the media are inclined to cite) but rather to exert that influence effectively and benevolently.

Ferguson argues that despite the ability of the United States to be a force for good in the world, the American "empire," demonstrates serious weaknesses due to its three "deficits" - its financial deficit, its manpower deficit, and its attention deficit.

The financial deficit comes not from military spending, but from the estimated $45 trillion in unfunded liabilities from Medicare/Medicaid and, to a lesser extent, Social Security. The manpower deficit comes not from a lack of population, but from an unwillingness of Americans to serve abroad, either in the military or in civilian positions. The attention deficit derives from the American desire for instant solutions - and the lack of "stomach" for long difficult jobs including national rehabilitation of regions with NO history of democratic or even civil rule.

His argument in the end is subtle but I think accurate. We do have a model for "nation building" in places like Sudan and Iraq - but not a willingness to make the long term commitment necessary to overcome those three fundamental deficits - and to act as a true leader of nations.

Ferguson's book seeks to outline and explain - not to create solutions for US policy makers. It provides a perspective lost on most Americans and is thus very much worth reading - especially as a counterpoint to his work on the British Empire.

books ......

I am not for a moment going to pretend that there was a chorus of angst at the thought of this blog ending - but I did hear from a couple of folks... and I am not sure that they were being completely sarcastic.

One in particular suggested that since I was always passing him books to read - that I might want to post links to some recent "reads" for those like me whose tastes lean towards history / politics or to some epic craptacular book involving special ops troops or a darn good "whacking".......

In that light - I invite you (one of my 7 readers) to take a look at a couple of rather fantastic books by Niall Ferguson - now a professor at Yale who writes these fascinating economic histories.

The first - EMPIRE - is an analysis of the effects of the British Empire. He asks candidly if the empire was overall a force for good or ill in the world and what its lasting impact has been on the current global balance both militarily, politically and economically. His convincing argument is that while NO empire is by definition universally benificent, that never the less the overall impact of Britain's overseas empire was largely positive.

Ferguson points to the significant benefit that has come to those who are now part of the Commonwealth - in particualr the rule of law and a tendency towards largely stable parliamentary democracies and federal systems. Interestingly, his economic analsysis demonstrates that investment and "profit" from the empire largely went in the direction of the imperial possessions (colonies having become something of a bad word) not the "mother country"..... England's investments IN the new world, India etc were substancially greater than the direct economic benefit at home.

A crucial section of the book looks for example at the tax rates within Great Britain, and the costs of Empire bourn by those tax payers, versus the security benefits and the real tax levels in the colonies. The supposedly "crippling" levels of taxation in the American colonies was actually significantly smaller than the tax levies of the voters in England itself!

The link to Amazon is at the right - I really recommend this one.....

A quick review and link to the follow up book Collosus will be posted in the next day or so.

Coming to an end

This should be one of 2-3 final posts to this blog.

The screen is indeed up and completed, the stereo system was installed today, and next week the final landscape lighting will be installed.

I will be posting pictures this weekend of the finished product - the movie above is of our pool. I took this clip this afternoon - it is difficult to see clearly - but when the remote is activated you can literally see this wave of water come out of the rotors and move down the pool. When running at speed you can see three distinct currents - the main flow down the center of the pool that one swims against, then the return streams on both sides as the water is pulled back to the rotors.

I am managing to swim just about every day that I am home - while that has not yet been as much as I like, I am still hoping that it is going to help.

So far it has not been me that enjoyed the system the most - it has been the folks who have visited us! With the FASTLANE pushing water at its maximum rate, the pool effectively becomes a water park. Our friends Greg and Jaemi and their five kids spent a really fun evening with us - and between riding the current towards the shallow end - then floating back along the sides as the water is pulled back into the jet - the kids had a blast.

At its maximum the swim unit is designed to push out a current that is the equivalent of swimming the 100 yard freestyle in about 58 seconds. Yes I can "beat the current" and swim from one end of the pool to the other against the flow - but that is NOT to say that I can maintain that pace!

I am turning the "flow" down sustancially from its max - and then swimming about 18 inches away from the rotors... the slower current reduces a lot of the turbulence in the pool (remember that at max it is pushing 5000 gallons a minute - effectively turning the COMPLETE water contents of the pool over once every 5 minutes!) and allows me to try and swim for a few minutes at a time before I allow myself to coast back to the shallow part of the pool.

My fitness level is SO LOW that I expect my "continuous" swimming is only 50-100 m at a time - but starting where I am I think ANYTHING is positive in terms of benefit.

And yes - I have purchased the swimp3 player - looking to get it loaded this week on the road and try it out next weekend!

SCREEN MOVING FORWARD

What a relief...!

Last night the county commissioners granted us the variance to move forward with a screen over our pool and deck.

TODAY the screen company will come by and complete the final engineering work, and the structure itself should be completed by the middle of next week.

I am not sure who is more relieved, me or the pool builder.... but I am just happy that we can get the final steps moving now. hope to get caught up by the end of the week.

Salt Water chlorination system was installed at the end of last week and is now working.

Counter Current Swim system was installed on Friday and should be commissioned today.

Generator (to keep it all going if there is a hurricane) was installed and should be tested by tomorrow.

Landscape Lighting Plan was formalized last week - first component will be installed this week - final "aroud pool" phase will go in as soon as the screen is built.

Sound system quote scheduled for tomorrow.....

Finally - we are a go for the council meeting on July 23rd to get the variance to finally BUILD the screen around the pool.

More details and lots of photos as soon as I can.

Thanks!

I think these will be REQUIRED

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_iunfvHBsUec/RokGxaevhTI/AAAAAAAAAIY/HwskwTca8s0/s400/swimp3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5082601100455937330" />
First - I am not at all convinced that wife.calm would be in favor of a purchase such as this - but I see NO choice. This is a necessary TOOL for assisting in my health plan. Plus the name itself is too clever.... SWIMP3. Brilliant!

I have tried a couple of different underwater music systems over the years.... ear buds, some of the early underwater "radios" etc and none have ever worked terribly well. Either the sound sucks - or the sound of the water itself overwhelms the sound of the music. This on the other hand is based on using bone induction.

What - sounds painful!?!

No - instead the sound wave is carried through your cheekbone into the water inside your inner ear... thus supposedly making the sound quality vastly improved over other attempts. The unit is small and just slips under the band of your goggles...

10 hour battery (more than enough for me - hell 20 minutes is going to be a stretch) and 256Mb of RAM....

Now wife.calm will I am sure make a variety of objections to these.... all reasonable - all rational - so I had best make a couple of points right now. First this is not NEW technology - bone induction for sound has been used for years.... and more importantly this is version 2 of the product... that means a purchase of these is NOT an early adopter acquistion.

Gotta get me some of these!

I miss Vancouver....

Will we go back to live? Sitting in the sun, all 20K gallons were at 80 degrees within 5 days. Now the water is consistently in the high 80's without anything but the sun inserting energy into the system.

We had the pool plumbed to accept a solar heating system as well as the installed heat pump - and I am thinking about getting the solar installed much more quickly than planned if only to run it at night as a means of DUMPING heat from the system to keep the termperature in a more "comfortable" zone for swimming.

Automation now live....

Today the builder completed the installation of our pool "automation" package.

Many of the elements that will eventually be controlled are still to be installed (the swim system, the salt/chlorine generator, solar heating etc) but by tomorrow we will at least be able to control that equipment already on site.

The device at left is our "pool digital assistant" - a waterproof wireless controller that communicates with the automation center installed with the physical plant beside our home. ( I hope) Unless it was going to be 15 m long - the only way to actually be able to swim in a backyard pool would be to put a current in the pool that I could swim AGAINST.

We have all seen the ads in the "in flight" magazines for Endless Pools.... but these are approx 6 foot by 10 feet and while very cool as a swim machine - not really appropriate for a backyard recreational pool.

There are several systems that would allow one to create a current in a full sized pool - but of the available options (Riverflow, Badujet) only one really looked like it would provide the type of current that one actually wants to use as resistance from a swimming perspective.... a new system from the folks at Endless pools called the FastLane.

Badujet is effectively a couple of hose nozzles that push a jet of water - very turbulent and not very strong - and while the Riverflow system LOOKS smooth - it also looks slow and underpowered.

The Fastlane system is a 6 HP hydraulic motor that pushes an impeller capable of pushing almost 5000 gallons a minute. The system is rated to be able to sustain a sub 1 minute 100 yard pace - so in my current state of health that is MORE than I need from a current generator.

The swim system can not be installed until the pool surface has had 30 days to cure - so we are still 3 weeks away from installation - but I am really looking forward to seeing it in action.

Green water?

Some friends commented by private message that the water in the pool sure looks green.

They are right!

Turns out the water in central FL (surprising no one who thought that the tap water here smells awful) contains lots of copper particles - tons of chlorine and lots of other dissolved minerals.

I left town this afternoon - but wife.com told me that the crew was back blowing the air (and construction crap) out of the pipes today - and that the filter system has been completed and is now running. Various chemicals (likely a muriatic acid) was added to the pool water to bring the PH into the range we want - and the "balancing" of the pool chemistry is underway now.

We will eventually be using a salt water system to keep algae and bacteria out of the pool - but these can not be started until after the PebbleSheen coating has had 30 days to cure - so by Thursday the goal is to have the pool chemistry balanced and have chlorine in the pool.... that means we will be able to swim by the weekend!

Just as the salt system can not be installed until the lining has had 28 days to cure - neither can the counter current swim system be installed until that period has passed.... As mentioned in an earlier post - it is a law in FL that there need to be two different means of securing a pool so that children can not accidentally gain access to the area.

As our screen is still likely 60 days out (assuming we DO get the variance) our two methods of protection are the temporary fence around the backyard - and now this child fence.

Holes are bored into our pavers - and the posts are placed into these to secure the fence. It is the work of only 10 minutes or so to take the fence down or install it - so once the screen is in place we will be able to store the barrier unless we have nieces and nephews visiting.

PebbleTec

A LARGE crew arrived this morning for 4 frantic hours of work.

While the gunite shell for the pool has been in the ground for almost 60 days - the actual "inside" of the pool is a technology called PebbleSheen. This is an exposed - but very soft and smooth - aggregate that is applied as if it was a mixture of cement and plaster.

Pools used to be either cement of vinyl lined - but evidently this rather more "foot friendly" technology was imported from Oz a decade or so ago. The American manufacturer of these products is named Pebbletec .

Evidently this finish is a mixture of small pieces of smooth stones and fixative. It is applied by spray and trowel - then after curing for a day is washed with an acid mixture to remove excess plaster then buffed for additional smoothness.

Not only is it a nice smooth surface - it can be colored in a variety of shades from white or blue all the way through to a black matte. For what it is worth we decided to go for a very light blue color officially called "cool blue".

The pictures to the Left show the team spraying the mixture onto the walls, the process of trow ling it smooth - and then the finished product after the application is complete.

Tomorrow the team will return to wash the surface with acid - then buff it to its finished state.

Hopefully another crew will also arrive tomorrow to install the child safety fence.

Work back underway

Phases 1-2 of the builders "comeback" plan has been executed. The variance application has been submitted to the county - and the temporary fence around the pool area has been installed.
With the fence up - the actual pool can be completed.

FL has very strict rules about the safety precautions that need to be in place before water can go in a pool. Better - they are tacitly acknowledging that fact.

Plan of action agreed to this afternoon:

Builder will construct a temporary but code compliant fence around our property to enable work on the pool to restart - no later than mid next week

Builder will file for (and pay for) the variance application

Builder acknowledges that I will be delaying a payment due now until AFTER the variance is granted - and that if it is NOT granted that we have a whole other set of issues with regards to compensation.

Builder recognizes that to get on the July council agenda that the paperwork needs to be completed by next week.

It is a plan - but it sure would have been nicer to be talking about construction completion next week than facing these hurdles.

I knew that this process was just going too well up to now!

Builder now feeling the pain

OK - so now that my blood pressure is back merely to a high boil rather than the sufficient to "power a cruiser" pressure zone - we are working the issue of the setback.

This is a major mistake by the builder.... and they even realize it at this point.

The contractor received word about this issue a full month prior to starting the actual construction of the home - and NEVER mentioned it to us until after the requested permits for the screen were rejected. If they had noticed the issue and talked with us we could have simply pulled the pool in another 3 feet closer to the home and the issue would have been resolved. We have the deck space to spare - and it would have actually saved us a couple of $k on deck materials etc.....

Instead we are at a complete construction halt - and we are going to have to wait as much as two months for the necessary paperwork to be approved (IF IT IS APPROVED) to get the screen up.

Obviously payments have been halted - and now we are escalating the pressure on the builder. This is not a case of OOOOPS... instead we are in the "what are you doing to fix this and keep building my pool" conversation now.

Tomorrow I will be calling the owner of the construction firm.... I wonder what they think of demolishing the pool and starting again on their dime?

A very abrupt halt

Well we have hit a BIG roadblock - and frankly it is a pretty momentous screw up.

Seems like the builder neglected to mention to us more than 60 days ago that when the county approved the plans for the pool - they REJECTED the notion of a screen enclosure. We are evidently less than the required setback from the brick wall behind our home - and will need a variance in order to get approval to complete the screen.

Now was posted earlier - our builder was WAITING for the screen to be constructed before completing the pool itself. ... so everything is currently halted awaiting resolution to this mess.

To make things worse - the next time we can get on the county agenda for a variance is not until JULY 23rd. Not so much because there is a problem as because we are waiting for one contractor to finish their piece before about 5 others can come on site to do their own work..

We have contracted for a screen enclosure - and that vendor is still waiting for the permits to come through from Seminole County. Once the permits are issued - the contractor can come on site to take final measurements, then fabricate and finally install the enclosure.

The current "word" is that we will hopefully have the permit issued next Tuesday / Wednesday - get the final measurements taken after Memorial Day, and have the screen actually built on site by the end of the first week in June.

According the the pool contractor - the construction can be completed within 10 days of the screen going up.

It LOOKS like a pool now - when it was only partly constructed it was easier to be patient.

Paver installation complete

I know even from the little bit of work that I did clearing the old pavers how hard that type of work is when it is 90 degress outside.

A crew of 6 arrived on Thursday - and in 10 hours of effort the entire deck is down, installed and completed.

Man do these guys work hard!

Wife.com is delighted with the color of the stones. Having said that– the types of materials available in those two categories are enormously varied.

There are engineered products like coolcrete, and stamped concrete which can look like bricks, stones, pavers or a 100 other surfaces.

But if concrete provides choices - once you start talking about stone, the options grow exponentially. There are a huge variety of paving materials including bricks in a range of colors, flagstone, marble, etc… then once one has chosen the material there are a variety of construction techniques and “treatments” that provide a range of designs etc.

Since our home had come with pavers originally and we liked the look (even if wife.com was not a big fan of the color) we decided to replace the existing pavers and change the color of the stones to something sandy and similar to the color of our house.

Removing the pavers was a nasty job – and that was only some 600 square feet. Including the lanai and the area around the pool – we are talking about almost 2000 square foot of pavers to be installed!

The picture at the left gives some perspective on the TONS of stones that were delivered this morning.

Today is probably the 100th time in the last month we have been grateful that there was an empty lot beside our home to act as a staging area for the construction process…..

Preparing the decking

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5063772010605439602" style="DISPLAY: block; Evidently they got word of the inspection by 10:00 am - and by 11:00 I was getting a call from the production coordinator informing me that concrete is being poured tomorrow.

Pouring on Tuesday - texture on Wednesday - and the installation of the decking on Thursday / Friday....

We contracted for a screen on Friday - and thought at the time that there would be approx two weeks until that step was required.... turns out that the screen is going to cause us a delay, but only because work is moving so quickly, not because of any timing issue.

Once the concrete footers are poured - THEN the screen company can come out and take precision measurements. Prior to that everything is only a "rough" plan on the screen. Instead of the 2-3 weeks between pouring the footer and completing the deck that was expected on our production plan - BOTH tasks will be complete in the same week.

Decking footer

The second part of the concrete prep entailed building the outline for the deck itself.

The deck itself is going to be covered in pavers (we will talk about that in more detail in a later entry) and required a “frame” to hold the pavers in place. This frame, also called a “pad” provides a foundation for the screen that will cover this whole area.

Evidently residential construction is really slow in Orlando right now. Instead of fighting to gain access to tradesmen in order to stay on track – we had a THIRD crew in the yard today working to create this deck frame.

A trench is dug – rebar to reinforce the concrete - then a wooden form is created to outline this 18 inch wide 12-18 inch deep concrete structure.

Once the frames themselves were in place – we needed to wait for the county inspectors to “bless” the pre-concrete work prior to having another team come in to pour.

Frame for the deck

While the tile guys were in the pool completing their tasks, another team was creating the forms for concrete work that would outline the brick paver deck and the concrete coping that marks the edges of the pool itself.

Our pool back in Vancouver had a slab concrete deck - and the coping was a simple strip of curved PVC pipe. The only alternative at the time was a to set concrete tiles on the edge of the pool themselves - sealed in concrete themselves but overlapping the edge of the pool.

Newer technology now allows for creating a seamless poured concrete edge that cantilevers over the edge of the pool - with the concrete itself being textured and then painted to provide a decorative border.

It took a crew only a few hours to create the forms for this poured concrete edge. That means two different crews will both be in and around the pool the next couple of days.

The builder has requested another county inspection on Friday - so they are really working to get these parallel tasks complete

That would put construction about 5 weeks ahead of the "worst case scenario" we were provided when the project began three weeks ago - but now I need to act quickly and get the screen enclosure itself under contract ASAP.

For those of you not used to FL pools - the custom here is to put a large screen enclosure around your pool - thus keeping bugs away and allowing one to leave doors and windows open, and providing a real extension of your living area. (an example of these types of screens is pictured to the right)

Folks here use the pool and the deck area as another family room, even going so far as to mount big screen TVs and stereos on the walls so that they can enjoy the area year round.

end of the beginning - not yet beginning of the end

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5058982641034062146" style="FLOAT: left; This pool is going to have three separate pumping systems, one for the pool itself - one for the waterfall - and a third to drive the counter current swim system.

It took almost 3 days to install the various bits of plumbing - what my friends on the tech side would call the pool's infrastructure.

The next step is to leave all of these trenches exposed so that the county can inspect and sign off on this phase - then the holes are filled in and we can start on the "finishing" of the pool.

Interesting phrase that "finishing" - seems like the vast majority of the big stuff is complete - but the contractors are telling me that it is going to be another 5-8 weeks to actually commission the pool.... this is the slow expensive stuff moving forward.

We have a shell

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5058223917881354450" style="DISPLAY: block;

All told this process took less than 6 hours to complete.

One week - and the basic shape of the pool is in place!

Framing

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5058215409551141010" style="FLOAT: left; Maybe it is the fact that our pool is not really that big compared to some - but they are really moving.

Next step was installing a special corrugated cardboard (i suspect just to keep sand out) around the basic shape of the pool then to create the skeleton of the structure with rebar. At the same time many of the "through the wall" elements like our lights, in ground cleaning system etc are all roughed in prior to the concrete being poured.

2 days is all it took to complete the framing and rough in.

Might as well come clean here on some those those "extras" that are going to be part of the pool.....

Those 5 white pipes you see coming out of the bottom of the pool are the basis for a self cleaning system of jets that pop up in a specific order and direct a powerful blast of water along the floor of the pool supposedly moving and dirt along the bottom and into a collection pan - the purpose of which is to greatly reduce the amount of time and effort one expends vacuuming the pool. It sounded neat to me - and as this is likely the only pool I will ever get to design from the ground up - I thought it a wise "investment.... we will see.

Ground breaking

Digging a pool in Orlando is a LOT easier than doing so in Vancouver.

I remember when we put a pool in the backyard of our home growing up… the digging phase alone lasted almost a month, and involved at least two rounds of blasting. Seems like an obvious step – can you imagine digging holes and then finding the whole pool was two feet left or right of where it needed to be?

This outline is a form made from 2x4’s providing the shape of the pool – and serves as a guide for the actual “digging”.

This step only took a couple of hours. Both the driveway and the lanai were covered in red brick pavers.

Pavers look great – but most of you who know wife.com realize that she is NOT a big fan of the color red. On election nights she likes to see red states – but not a lot of other red colored objects get her OK. Realizing that we were putting down another 1400 square feet of deck – we decided to pull the existing pavers ourselves and then get more of a sandstone colored paver not only around the new pool, but under the lanai as well.

We would save $700 removing the bricks themselves…. It seemed a good idea at the time.

Planning

Planning the pool was actually a lot of fun. Some of the different contractors we talked with even had interactive design software that allowed us to see renderings of the changes in real time as we made adjustments.

In the end we decided on a roughly rectangular shape... no surprise as everyone who ever swam as a kid still thinks of pools as places to do laps.

There are a couple of unique design elements in this pool that I am pretty jazzed about. First - On the right you can see a notation for a FastLane swim system. This is a counter current swim system that should (i hope) allow one to swim in place against a smooth flow of water. The unit we have purchased is designed to provide a sub 1 minute per 100 meter swim pace at maximum "thrust"…. Like I could swim at that pace now for more than about 15 meters before I explode!

We also have a pretty substantial waterfall planned for the back side of the pool. It is what they call a "sheer descent" meaning that the water flows at a high enough rate that the stream of water appears solid.
